A former soccer player has been convicted of killing a 15-year-old girl who was trying to escape her family’s abusive husband.
Prosecutors said Jan-Amanda van der Zee was convicted of the April 2012 death of Nilske Rijkersma.
She was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was ordered to pay a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors say van der Keesm was living in the Netherlands with his wife and two daughters, and that he killed his wife after she broke up with him.
She had been trying to leave the family home in the eastern town of Eredivisie and was found on a nearby beach with a bullet wound in her head.
Van der Zeesm is accused of killing her in the parking lot of the couple’s home.
Her father, who was not named in court, said in a statement that the girl had been a good girl and loved by her parents and brother.
She loved her football team and her brother and was very proud of her achievements, he said.
The case is the latest in a string of high-profile killings in Croatia.
Prosecutors say at least nine people have been killed in recent years.
