The Houston Dynamo beat No. 11 Georgetown, 3-2, to reach the second round of the College Cup, the third-year college tournament.
Houston has a good track record of making it to the NCAA Sweet 16 in recent years, and the team is led by former MLS star Dax McCarty.
But the Dynamo missed out on the NCAA championship this year.
They played in the College World Series and lost in the semifinals.
In a statement, Dynamo owner Bill Edwards said the team’s trip to the Sweet 16 was “a long time coming.”
“This was not a decision that was easy,” Edwards said.
“I know there are a lot of passionate fans out there.
It is a decision we have to make.
Edwards said the Dynamo “will look at our options and how we can improve” and “will be more vocal in our communication to fans.””
